Beethoven is horror. Hear me out!
Okay, okay, before you guys come at me with pitchforks, I know "Beethoven" isn't technically a horror movie. Family comedy, right? Big slobbery dog, hijinks ensue, blah blah blah. But I have a theory I can't shake: from Beethoven's perspective, it's absolutely a horror story. Think about it! He's a helpless puppy, snatched from his siblings (talk about a slasher opening!). He's constantly being chased and threatened by Dr. Varnick, who legit looks like a Bond villain. The kids kinda torture him sometimes, and the dad is always yelling. Like, if you strip away the cheery music and the goofy faces, it's a vulnerable creature constantly in mortal danger. And let's talk about Varnick for a sec. He's the embodiment of pure evil in a family film! He experiments on dogs! He plots to KILL BEETHOVEN for profit! Who does that in a movie about a big, lovable goofball? His scenes are genuinely terrifying. I still remember being a kid and hiding behind the couch during the climax when Varnick's trying to inject Beethoven. Nightmares, I tell you, pure nightmares. Even the lighter scenes have a sinister undertone. That time Beethoven trashes the party? From his perspective, it's probably a desperate attempt to protect his family from these strange, invading creatures (aka the party guests). He's just misunderstood! I'm not saying it's "Get Out" level social commentary, but there's definitely a darker side to "Beethoven" if you look at it from the dog's point of view. So, next time you watch it, try seeing it through Beethoven's eyes. Suddenly, it's not just a cute family movie; it's a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat thriller about survival. Maybe i'm overthinking it, but I'm just putting it out there for discussion! What do you guys think?
