UniSol: Underrated Action Gem or Cheesy 90s Throwback?
Alright, fellow Gen Xers, moviebuff_marc here. Just re-watched "Universal Soldier" (1992) the other night and it got me thinking. I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid and being blown away by the action. Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren going head-to-head? What's not to love? But watching it now, it's definitely...different. The plot is kinda ludicrous, right? Vietnam vet comes back as a super soldier... I mean, okay. And the way they just kinda 'wake up' all of a sudden? Felt rushed. But here's the thing: despite the clunky dialogue and some questionable special effects, there's something undeniably fun about it. The fight scenes are brutal, even by today's standards, and Dolph Lundgren's performance as the completely unhinged Sgt. Andrew Scott is genuinely unsettling. Remember the ear necklace? Yikes. It reminds me of "RoboCop," but maybe dumber and with more exploding gas stations. My question is, does this movie hold up, or is it just pure nostalgia goggles for me? And does anyone else think the UniSol look was a weird precursor to all those cyborg dudes from the Matrix? I'm probably reaching, but I'm curious what you all think. Was this everyone's guilty pleasure, or am I alone in kinda loving this cheesy action flick?
