Okay, "Universal Soldier" is Peak 90s Action (and I'm here for it)

Alright, horror peeps, I took a little detour from the scary stuff and revisited "Universal Soldier" (1992) the other night. I know, I know, it's not technically horror, but hear me out! Between the resurrected soldiers and the whole 'unstoppable killing machine' vibe, it's got those dark thriller elements I crave. Plus, any movie with Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren throwing down is automatically worth a watch in my book. Their rivalry is so good, especially when you realize it stems from something that happened in Vietnam - some messed up stuff. What I found so interesting on this rewatch was the whole concept. These guys are supposed to be the ultimate soldiers, but they're clearly losing their minds! Devoreaux's memories start flooding back, and then the whole, like, 'eating' thing with Scott? Super creepy and unsettling! It's like the movie is asking, 'what's the cost of creating a perfect soldier?' - Pretty deep for an action flick starring JCVD. The scene where Devoreaux has flashes of the village massacre is well done as well, the contrast is striking. I'm not gonna lie, the special effects are pretty dated now, but the action sequences still hold up. And honestly, seeing Ally Walker as the reporter trying to uncover the truth adds a good dynamic to the story. She's way more than just a damsel in distress! I remember how she plays so well off of Van Damme. Overall it's not like some super deep movie, but it's a SOLID action movie with some seriously dark undertones that kept me entertained. Worth a watch for fans of 90s action cheese with a side of creepy sci-fi. Anyone else have a soft spot for this one?
