Malcolm X: Did Anyone Else Catch...

Okay, so I've watched Malcolm X (the Spike Lee joint, of course) like... a million times. Seriously, it's one of those movies I can always go back to. And every single time, I notice something new. This time, it was during the prison scenes. Specifically, it's when Malcolm is first starting to learn how to read and write. He's copying out the dictionary, right? I always focused on the fact that he was self-educating and how powerful that was. But this time, I paid more attention to Baines's (Albert Hall) patience. He's clearly seen something special in Malcolm from the get-go and is SO dedicated to helping him, even when Malcolm is being a total firebrand. Did anyone else pick up on that deep undercurrent there? It felt more profound this time around. Maybe it's just me getting older and appreciating the quiet support more than the loud pronouncements. My question is this: Do you think Baines knew Malcolm was going to become Malcolm X? Like, did he foresee the impact Malcolm would have, or was he just trying to help a lost soul find his way? I'd love to hear your thoughts! (also side note, Denzel Washington is a god fr)
