Vinny Gambini: Fashion Icon? Let's Talk 'My Cousin Vinny'
Okay, so I just re-watched 'My Cousin Vinny' and while the plot is hilarious (seriously, Marisa Tomei is GOLD), I couldn't help but notice...the clothes. Like, Vinny's leather jacket and gold chains are SO '90s New York, it hurts. It's almost a costume in itself, screaming 'fish out of water' every second he's in that courtroom or diner. It's not exactly good fashion, but it's so perfectly him. And Mona Lisa Vito? Don't even get me STARTED. Her outfits are a masterclass in early '90s sass! The pink leggings, the oversized sweaters... pure perfection. Especially that amazing leather mini skirt, iconic! But honestly, beyond the obvious New York style clash with rural Alabama, the clothes really tell a story. You see Vinny slowly adapt, even just a little, as the movie goes on. Remember that scene where he actually wears a suit? (Even if it is ill-fitting lol) It's small, but it shows him trying to meet the expectations of the setting and the gravity of the situation. I think what I loved most is that the costuming never went for easy laughs. Even though it's a comedy, the clothes felt real and integral to the characters. The other characters--the people in the town--felt more realistic, but also somewhat caricatures. Okay, maybe it did go for easy laughs sometimes, but I still really enjoyed it. So, thoughts? Did anyone else notice how the costuming played a role? Am I totally overthinking this (probably, lol)? Let me know!
