Okay, "A League of Their Own" -- Hear Me Out. Worldbuilding Potential?!
So, I was randomly watching "A League of Their Own" again the other night (don't judge, it's a comfort movie, okay?) and something kinda struck me. We're always talking about world-building in sci-fi and fantasy, right? But this movie kinda does its own version of it, just… historical-based. Think about it: it's not just about baseball. It creates this whole alternate reality where women's baseball is, for a hot minute, a real cultural force because of wartime. Specifically, I was thinking about when they're at charm school and getting all those lessons from Miss Cuthbert about not getting dirty. It made me wonder even more about the off-screen parts of that world. Like, what was the media coverage like? Were there gossip magazines dedicated to the Rockford Peaches? Did kids collect their trading cards? And beyond that - the players themselves came from all over...what were their backstories like? Like, imagine digging into the history of Marla Hooch! I bet she had a WILD pre-baseball life. I wonder if there are any good fanfics that fully explore that concept? I know it sounds crazy, but my brain immediately went into 'designing a whole universe' mode! It's like a tiny, contained alternate history, and seeing how drastically one thing (WWII and the subsequent lack of men) shifted societal norms is kinda cool. Anyone else ever thought about "A League of Their Own" in this kinda way, or am I just losing it? Plus, Madonna's in it, and that's always a win. Seriously though, I'm curious if anyone has some historical deep dives to recommend on the short-lived women's league, or headcanons they'd like to share. I'm all ears!
