"A League of Their Own" - More Than Just Baseball, Right?!
Okay, so I just rewatched "A League of Their Own" and while it's definitely a feel-good sports movie, I kinda think it's also secretly a movie about women finding themselves, ya know? Like, yeah, they're playing baseball which is awesome, but think about it - Dottie leaves behind her farm life for something bigger, Mae and Doris are constantly hustling and living life on their own terms, and even Kit gets out from under Dottie's shadow. It's like, they're all breaking free from what's expected of them. And don't even get me STARTED on Geena Davis! She's amazing. I think the scene where she chooses to drop the ball at the end is huge. It's not just about losing the game. It's about her making a choice, finally putting Kit first. It's like, she can't be everything to everyone. That whole rivalry thing was seriously intense! I was legit screaming at the TV. Plus, the whole thing being set during WWII adds another layer. The guys are off fighting, and these women are stepping up and proving they can do anything. Maybe that was the point the whole time? Not JUST that they play baseball, but that they are just as capable as men, and that they can have fun and figure themselves out in the process. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I think it's more than just a cute comedy about baseball. It's about female empowerment, even if it's wrapped in a baseball uniform and some seriously questionable hairstyles. What do you all think? Am I reaching, or are you seeing it too?
