Far and Away: Tom Cruise yelling in an Irish accent... and I kinda loved it?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "Far and Away" and... wow. It's definitely a movie. Like, a real BIG movie, you know? I went in expecting some ridiculous Irish stereotypes (and there were definitely some) but I was also honestly captivated. Especially by Nicole Kidman. Her character, Shannon, is so wonderfully stubborn and fiercely independent, even when she's down on her luck. The whole fancy lady pretending to be poor thing was a bit overdone at times, but Kidman sold it. Plus, the costumes were gorgeous! Tom Cruise as Joseph Donelly... Look, the accent wasn't great. Let's just be honest. But he brought a real physicality to the role. The bare-knuckle boxing scene? Intense! And the land rush sequence? My heart was pounding even though I knew what was going to happen. There were moments when it felt a little long, and the plot got kinda convoluted with Shannon's parents in the back half, but it kept me invested. The chemistry between Cruise and Kidman was undeniable, which makes sense given their history, LOL. What really got me, though, was the sheer scope of the thing. You really felt the desperation and hope of these immigrants looking for a better life. It was visually stunning, even though it did feel a little... sanitized? Like, a glossy version of poverty. But still, those wide shots of Oklahoma were breathtaking. And the ending, with them reclaiming their little piece of land... I'm not gonna lie, I teared up a little. Overall, "Far and Away" is a flawed but ultimately satisfying epic. It's not perfect, but it's entertaining as heck, and the performances are strong enough to carry it through some of the weaker plot points. Definitely worth a watch if you're in the mood for something grand and romantic, even with the questionable accents and a few historical oversights. What did y'all think?
