Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot: Hear me out...intentional badness?
Okay okay, I know what you're thinking. Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot? Really, dkim_films? But hear me out, I have a theory. I watched it again the other night (don't ask why, it was late, I was bored) and I started wondering if the awful special effects and sound design weren't actually intentional. Like, on purpose bad. Think about it. The whole movie is about a totally over-the-top, unrealistic mom. And the action sequences? They're cartoonish. The gunshot sound effects are ridiculously loud and echoey. The explosions look like they were made with MS Paint (okay, maybe an exaggeration, but you get my point.) Could it be that they were going for a self-aware, deliberately cheesy vibe to match Estelle Getty's performance? Remember that scene where she 'rescues' him on the motorcycle? The shaky cam and obvious green screen are almost...too bad to be true. Like they're poking fun at action movie tropes. I mean, maybe I'm reaching, and it really was just a low-budget trainwreck. But I've seen low-budget movies with way better practical effects. And the script is already so absurd; bad foley actually complements the premise. The scene in the warehouse shootout, when the thugs are firing at Joe (Stallone) and his mom with what sound like cannons... it's almost comically bad. What do you guys think? Am I giving them too much credit, or is there a method to the madness? Maybe the real genius here is how they leaned so hard into the absurdity that it becomes... watchable? I don't know, hit me with your thoughts, I'm genuinely curious!
