Rewatching Forever Young: Still Makes Me Cry, Still Notice New Stuff!
Okay, so I just rewatched "Forever Young" (again, lol) and I still get SO choked up at the end. But this time, something different struck me. It's not just the sappy romance (though, let's be real, Mel Gibson in his prime definitely helps!). It's the friendship between Daniel and Harry. I always kinda glossed over it, but their bond is seriously the heart of the movie. Harry's willingness to do the cryo experiment for Daniel, risking everything... that's true dedication. Like, who would actually do that for their friend?! I also noticed how beautifully they capture the shift from the 30s to the 90s. It's not just the clothes and cars. It's the way people act. Daniel's initial shock at everything is hilarious, but also kinda heartbreaking. Imagine waking up 50+ years later and everything you know is gone. The scene in the supermarket where he's just totally overwhelmed? Genius. And let's talk about Elijah Wood! He was such a cute kid! His performance is actually pretty nuanced for a child actor. The way he believes in Daniel and helps him... it's really touching. Okay, maybe I'm just a sap, but I defy anyone to watch the ending and not tear up a little. One thing did bug me, though. How did they not make a bigger deal about the whole 'airplane engine' thing?! The whole climax hinges on him fixing a specific engine from the 30s, but they gloss over the specifics. A bit handwavey, I thought. Despite that, I still give it like a 8/10. Classic movie, still holds up!
