Harvey Keitel's Painful Performance in 'Bad Lieutenant' Still Raw

Okay, so I finally got around to watching 'Bad Lieutenant' (the original, obvs – Herzog's is a different beast entirely). Man, that's a tough film. I knew going in it was gonna be dark, but Keitel just inhabits that character. It's not just acting, it feels like something deeper, almost… Method gone wild? Anyone know if he went full immersion for this role? I'd be curious to find out. Technically, it's not like, groundbreaking visual effects or anything (obviously), but the sound design really gets under your skin. That constant, low-level hum of the city, punctuated by the aggressive yells and sirens... it perfectly mirrored the Lieutenant's internal chaos. And the way they used silence, especially during some of the more disturbing scenes, was really effective. Speaking of disturbing, that rape scene is... graphic. And the basketball game scene where he rants at the TV? Cringey but I couldn't look away. Honestly, I'm not sure if I "enjoyed" it, but it definitely left an impression. It's the kind of movie that sticks with you, like a bad taste. I appreciate how unflinching it is, even if it's uncomfortable to watch. It's a raw, brutal character study that avoids easy answers. Overall, definitely not for everyone, but if you're looking for something that's intense and uncompromising, this is a solid watch. Just maybe don't watch it right before bed, lol. What were your thoughts?
