Anyone else find 1492 kinda...boring? (Hear me out)

Okay, so I finally got around to watching "1492: Conquest of Paradise" the other night. Figured a historical epic about Columbus would be, y'know, something. But honestly, I was kinda bored. I mean, visually it's alright, some of the sailing scenes were pretty epic, and Depardieu is always solid, but compared to, say, Braveheart, it just felt...flat? Maybe I'm just spoiled by all the insane action movies I watch, but I was expecting something a little more thrilling, especially considering the subject matter. What I really wanted to see more of was the practical stuff. Did they actually use real ships for those ocean scenes? They looked pretty darn big, and the shots of them battling the elements looked fairly convincing. I also wonder if there were any good accidents, and if they showed it on the blooper reel. I heard Ridley Scott, the director, is not known for having blooper reels though. Maybe I went in with the wrong expectations. I wasn't looking for historical accuracy necessarily, but thought there be more tension between Columbus and the crew, or more clashes with the native population. It felt more like a historical drama, instead of a real adventure. Anyone else feel this way? Or am I just missing something crucial about why people like this film? I'm genuinely curious because I think the premise has a lot of potential. I'm always looking for new things to watch! Anyone got other suggestions about historical epics with practical stunts that are worth watching? I'm pretty open to most genres, be sure to give me a heads up if its not historical!
