"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1992) - Underrated Cult Classic or Just Plain Cheesy?
Okay, horror fiends, let's talk about the original Buffy movie from '92. I know, I know, most people think of Sarah Michelle Gellar and the TV show when they hear "Buffy," but Kristy Swanson was slaying vamps WAY before her! I re-watched it last night and I have so many mixed feelings. On one hand, it's got that classic 90s campiness that I weirdly love. Paul Reubens as a vampire? Iconic! Pee-wee Herman gone undead and snarky is just chef's kiss. But then, there are parts that are just...oof. Some of the dialogue is clunky, and Donald Sutherland's Merrick is giving serious creepy-mentor vibes. Like, I get he's supposed to be this wise watcher, but sometimes his scenes with Buffy made me uncomfy. Also, the vampires themselves felt a lot less menacing than they do in the show. More like goofy goons than actual threats. I did like that one vampire in the beginning that bit the guy in the alley. His eyes changed and it was pretty scary. So, my question for you all is: where do you fall on the '92 Buffy spectrum? Is it a fun, silly precursor to a much better show, or does it hold up on its own as a legitimate (if flawed) horror-comedy? And follow-up: who do you think played the part better, Kristy Swanson or Sarah Michelle Gellar? I'm torn! Is it even fair to compare them? Bonus points if anyone remembers that one random scene where Buffy is doing gymnastics and it has absolutely nothing to do with the plot LOL. What WAS that about?!
