The Lawnmower Man: Virtual Reality or Virtual Insanity? (Theory Time!)
Okay, so I just rewatched The Lawnmower Man (don't judge, it's a guilty pleasure!), and I have a theory brewing that I need to get out there. Hear me out: Jobe isn't just getting smarter. I think he's experiencing reality slippage before he even gets fully integrated into cyberspace. Remember the scene where he's mowing the lawn, and everything starts glitching out, and we see those weird, distorted perspectives? That's not just a visual effect to show he's getting brainier. I think the experiments are messing with his perception of reality itself, blurring the lines between what's real and what's the virtual world Dr. Angelo is building. Think about it: a lot of the 'visions' he has later in the movie where things are all geometric and weird-- they're not always connected to the VR headset. It's like his brain is rewriting reality based on the code and stimuli he's immersed in. I'm wondering if the movie is suggesting that the human mind, pushed far enough, can basically overwrite the external world. And that's where the god complex comes from. It's not just that he thinks he's a god in cyberspace; he actually believes he's reshaping reality itself because his brain has learned to treat everything as malleable code. My only issue with the theory is with the ending. Why is Angelo stuck in that state with him? I'm not sure about that. Maybe the VR world is leaking into the real world and is altering everyone's perception? Also, someone needs to explain to me why mowing the lawn is the key to computer science. What are laws of lawn? shrugs Anyway, it might be a bit out there, but it makes the movie a little more interesting don't you think? Let me know your thoughts!
