Sleepwalkers (1992): Seriously, What Was Stephen King On?

Okay, so I finally subjected myself to Sleepwalkers. I knew going in it was going to be... well, different. I mean, King's cameos are usually a good wink, but this whole thing felt like he'd mainlined a bunch of rejected ideas and then just threw them at the wall. Seriously, sentient werecat-vampire-things that can only be killed by cats? And incestuous undertones thicker than pea soup? I'm all for the bizarre, but there has to be some internal logic, right? Specifically, I keep thinking about the scene where Tanya sees Charles' eyes turn all freaky red. The actress, Mädchen Amick, sells the terror, no doubt. But then it's just... cats. Everywhere. Attacking. It's played so over the top, almost comical, that it undermines the genuine suspense they built earlier. And the corn-on-the-cob scene? I think I actually groaned out loud. Was that supposed to be scary, sexy, or just plain weird? Because it landed firmly in 'plain weird' territory. Honestly, I'm wondering if maybe my expectations were off. Did anyone else find anything genuinely scary about this film? Or is this just a case of King indulging in his stranger impulses with a blessedly low budget. I will say, Alice Krige is amazing as Mary Brady, even if her motivations are completely bonkers. She's clearly having a ball, and that's the only thing that kept me watching. Maybe I just need to watch it again while hammered. Also, anyone know who directed this? No idea. Feel free to let me know! Cheers.
