Pet Sematary II: Okay, But Clancy Brown, Tho...
Alright, so I finally caved and watched Pet Sematary II. Look, I know, I know. It's... not Pet Sematary. But honestly? I didn't hate it. The whole atmosphere is definitely darker and grittier than the first film, which I appreciated. And Edward Furlong is FINE as Jeff, doing the whole angsty teen thing pretty well. I felt bad for the dude, losing his mom so young and then being stuck in that Podunk town. BUT. The REAL reason to watch this movie is Clancy Brown. Seriously. His performance as Gus is... chef's kiss. He's genuinely terrifying! The scene where he's abusing Drew's dog, Zowie, honestly made my stomach turn. And then, when he comes back... oh man. The way he delivers his lines – completely unhinged but still believable – is just fantastic. It's the kind of role you love to hate, and Brown plays it to perfection. Without him, I think the movie would be completely forgettable. I liked some of the gore effects too! It felt a little more practical and less CGI-dependant than what they could have done. It just felt like a genuine scary movie. I think there was some really good stuff there. Overall, Pet Sematary II isn't a classic, and it definitely doesn't live up to the original, but it's a decent horror flick with a standout performance from Clancy Brown. Would I watch it again? Probably not anytime soon. But would I recommend it to someone who's looking for a cheesy-but-creepy 90s horror movie? Absolutely. Just go in with lower expectations and prepare to be disturbed by Gus.
