Lorenzo's Oil: Gut-wrenching, but did they nail the science?
Okay, so I finally watched Lorenzo's Oil and wow. Just, wow. I knew it was going to be emotional, but Debra Winger and Nick Nolte just destroyed me with their performances. The scene where they first get the diagnosis, when you see the hope literally drain from their faces...ugh, still gets me. The sheer desperation Augusto and Michaela displayed was palpable. It felt so incredibly raw and real - like a window into a parents' worst nightmare. I'm always drawn to character-driven stories, and this definitely delivered on that front. You felt their frustration, their unwavering love for Lorenzo, and their determination to fight even when everyone else told them it was hopeless. The way they devoured medical textbooks, challenged the established medical community, and just refused to give up was truly inspiring. I was rooting for them the whole time, even though, tragically, Lorenzo still suffered. I think this story is an amazing showcase of the lengths parents will go to help their children. Maybe this is controversial, but I couldn't help but wonder when watching, how much was dramatized or not. I heard it's based on a real story... but I'm also a bit wary of movies that simplify complex scientific stuff. I’m not a scientist, so I can’t vouche if the medical accuracy is on point LOL. I guess I just struggled with how quickly they seemed to grasp everything. Still an emotionally powerful film, though, and one I'll be thinking about for a while. Anyone else seen it? What did you think of the performances or the scientific accuracy (or innacuracy?)?
