Lorenzo's Oil: What If It's ALL a Test? (Hear me out!)
Okay, so I know 'Lorenzo's Oil' isn't sci-fi per se, but stick with me. I watched it again last night, and I had this crazy theory pop into my head. What if Lorenzo's illness, ALD, was introduced artificially? Like, some shadowy government experiment gone wrong? Think about it: such a rare condition suddenly popping up? Maybe it's an advanced biological weapon they accidentally unleashed... or worse, deliberately tested on an unsuspecting population. The Odones fighting against the medical establishment could be symbolic of fighting against a bigger evil they don't even fully understand. The doctor's reluctance to help could be from some other mysterious force stopping him. I know, I know, it sounds out there, but this movie messes with your head!. It's the whole "against all odds" thing that gets me. The Odones, laypeople, managing to find a cure the experts can't is kind of like a classic sci-fi trope -- the lone rebel fighting the system with ingenuity. The scenes where they're pouring over medical journals reminded me of some of the hacking scenes from 'Sneakers.' It's that 'ordinary people doing extraordinary things' vibe. Plus, the ambiguous ending where we don't REALLY see Lorenzo "cured", but implied he will be okay, could be intentional-- a little sci-fi twist to keep you wondering. And the oil itself? What if it's some kind of radical, undiscovered compound with unforeseen future applications? We only see the immediate effects on ALD, but what else could it do? Super soldier serum, anyone? I'm kidding, mostly. But I really think this movie is a lot more than just a medical drama. It's a powerful story about human resilience against a force they can't see or understand. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but the ambiguity is what gets me thinking and why I love movies like this! Any thoughts?
