Like Water for Chocolate: Is Tita a Witch? (Hear me out!)
Okay, so I just finished rewatching "Like Water for Chocolate" at like, 3 AM, as one does. And yeah, it's beautiful and romantic and all that jazz, but something keeps nagging at me. Is Tita secretly a witch? I know, I know, it's a period piece, a family drama, magical realism and all that, but think about it. Her emotions literally infuse into the food! Remember when she's making the wedding cake and she's all heartbroken? Everyone who eats it gets sick and starts crying for lost loves. That's not just good writing, that's some serious…something. And it's not just sadness! The quail in rose petal sauce? Instant lust-fest. I mean, come on. The guy literally builds a tower of doves. Doves! The movie makes it pretty clear that these aren't just metaphors. It's like Tita has some kind of psychic connection to what she cooks, and that magic gets passed on to the people who eat it, right? It's more than just cooking skill, it's like she's channelling some kind of ancient energy. I’m not saying she has a broomstick stashed in the pantry, but there's definitely something… unexplainable going on there. Think about Mama Elena, too. Total ice queen, right? But is she just a hardass mom, or is she actively suppressing Tita's powers? Maybe she knows what Tita is capable of and is doing everything she can to keep her "gift" - or curse - under control? It kinda makes her cruelty a little more… understandable? Still doesn’t excuse her behavior, obvi. Maybe I'm just grasping at straws here because I'm sleep-deprived, but I think there's more to Tita than meets the eye (or the taste buds, I guess). Anyone else get this vibe? Or am I officially losing it? Maybe I need to lay off the late-night Mexican dramas for a while. Nah, who am I kidding? Next up: "El Espinazo del Diablo." Wish me luck!
