Sean Connery in the Rainforest? My 'Medicine Man' Thoughts

Okay, so I finally got around to watching 'Medicine Man' (1992) the other night – yeah I know, I'm REALLY behind on this one! I had this on my list forever. It's that movie with Sean Connery as some, like, botanist doing research in the Amazon, right? I was expecting something really profound, like a Herzog film, but what I got was... interesting. I will say, the scenery is breathtaking. Truly stunning. And Lorraine Bracco is great as the research assistant Rae Crane, who Connery's character Dr. Campbell initially gives a TERRIBLE time. It's so cliché, but I was cringing watching that. Some of the dialogue felt really cheesy, especially when they're spouting scientific jargon about the cure for cancer. I mean, I get the stakes, but it felt a little heavy-handed. I liked the subplot about the indigenous people and the looming threat of deforestation though, that felt more real and added some needed depth. Ultimately, I felt like it was a decent watch. Not amazing, but pretty watchable overall. I thought the romance was forced, but I was really rooting for the tribe when everything was going down with the bulldozers at the research site. My biggest complaint is I wish they had focused more on the science, less on the bickering. I like that the film is about a global crisis and the importance of biodiversity, but the pacing didn't really do it justice. Has anyone else seen this? What were your thoughts? I was really hoping for something that would blow me away, but it just kinda landed somewhere in the middle for me. Maybe my expectations were too high going in! #internationalcinema #medicine man #seanconnery #rainforest #filmreview
