Medicine Man: Sean Connery in the Rainforest - Worth a Watch?

Okay, so I recently revisited "Medicine Man" (the 1992 Sean Connery flick) and I have some thoughts. I wouldn't exactly call it a hidden gem, but it definitely has its moments. The plot, for those who haven't seen it, is basically Connery as this eccentric scientist Dr. Campbell who's found a potential cancer cure in the Amazon, but then Lorraine Bracco shows up as his assigned research assistant and he's, well, kind of a jerk about her being a woman at first. Naturally, they eventually have to work together when the jungle (and their research) is threatened. What really stands out is the cinematography. The Amazon setting is absolutely gorgeous, and the movie does a decent job of highlighting the urgency of protecting it. Connery, well, he's Connery. He chews the scenery a bit, but he's also undeniably charismatic. And Bracco holds her own, even if her character's initial 'fish out of water' vibe felt a little forced. There's this one scene where they're both suspended in these harnesses high up in the trees, observing the canopy – the visual is stunning, and it's where you really start to see them connecting. My biggest issue is probably with the overall pacing. It feels a bit slow in parts, and the whole 'will they/won't they' tension between Campbell and Rae can be eye-rollingly predictable. Plus, the science isn't exactly airtight, which is forgiveable, but it maybe misses a chance to really delve into the indigenous knowledge they're supposedly drawing from. I kept hoping they'd show more of the local people and use their medicines and not so much the weird air sac. Overall, I'd say "Medicine Man" is a decent watch if you're in the mood for some scenic visuals and a somewhat predictable but entertaining adventure. Just don't go in expecting groundbreaking cinema. Anyone else seen this one? What were your favorite (or least favorite) parts?
