Jamon Jamon...Okay, I'm Slightly Scarred But Also...Intrigued?
Alright, so I just finished watching Jamon Jamon. Whew. I don't even know where to start. This movie is...something else. Penélope Cruz is stunning, obviously, but the whole thing is just so bizarre and over-the-top. Like, the mom hiring a bullfighter to seduce her son's fiancée? What?! My jaw literally dropped. Javier Bardem…young Javier Bardem… yeah, I get the hype. He brings a raw, kinda dangerous energy to Raul. Honestly, I felt a little sorry for José Luis (Jordi Mollà). He just seemed totally clueless and caught in the middle of everyone else's drama. There's this one scene, I think near the end, with the ham...yeah, the ham...as like, a weapon. Seriously, I almost choked on my popcorn. It's so weirdly symbolic and violent and...I don't even know. I'm not usually one for super strange or surreal cinema, but this movie kind of got under my skin. It's definitely provocative. Maybe a little too provocative at times, like some scenes are just uncomfortable, not sexy, you know? I definitely wouldn't call it a lighthearted watch, and I'm not entirely sure I liked it in a happy, sunshine-and-rainbows kind of way. But it's been a couple of hours and I'm still thinking about it, which says something, right? It's a movie that makes you feel things, even if those things are confusion and a slight sense of existential dread, lol. Overall, Jamon Jamon is...an experience. If you're looking for something different and don't mind a healthy dose of weirdness, give it a shot. Just be prepared for some seriously awkward family dynamics and a whole lotta ham.
