"Strictly Ballroom": Okay, I'm Officially Ob-sessed
Okay, people, I just watched "Strictly Ballroom" for maybe the tenth time? And I'm still finding new things to love. I know, I know, it's not exactly new cinema, but I'm convinced Baz Luhrmann owes this movie a HUGE check. He basically took the maximalism and heart, and ran with it. I can't believe it wasn't Luhrmann because it just has that over-the-top quality in the BEST way. The colours, the costumes, the DRAMA of it all... I live! Seriously, Scott Hastings thinking he's too good for basic steps? Relatable, if my only talent was making a perfect cheese toastie. But honestly, it's Fran that really gets me. She's like the underdog of underdogs, and the way she blooms when she finally gets to dance with Scott? Chef's kiss. And the Paso Doble scene with her family?? Gets me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. That moment when Barry Fife tries to sabotage them--I was literally yelling at the screen. He's the villain we all love to hate, pure snobbery! Okay, maybe he's a little too over-the-top, but it's kind of perfect. I think what gets me is the message, though. It's about daring to be different, even when everyone's telling you to conform. Plus, the dancing is actually pretty great. There's something so charming about all the styles and it's not just about the classic glamour. I guess it's a feel-good movie that doesn't feel fake or corny. It's just really fun! Anyone else adore this movie as much as I do? What are your favourite scenes or moments? Let's discuss! I'm dying to know if other people get as emotionally invested as I do, lol. I might even try to learn some of those flamenco moves... wish me luck!
