"The Mask": Was Stanley Ipkiss ALWAYS a Little...Mad?

Okay, so, I just re-watched "The Mask" (1994) for like, the millionth time, and something struck me. We all know the mask brings out the wearer's inner desires, right? "It's party time! P-A-R-T-Why? Because I gotta!" But what if Stanley Ipkiss... already HAD that kind of insane chaotic energy bottled up? Like, the mask just gave him permission to Unleash It. Think about it. Before he even finds the mask, the dude is clearly frustrated with being a pushover. He's obsessed with cartoons, gets walked all over at the bank, and has a seriously warped sense of humor (that exploding alarm clock scene, anyone?). It’s always felt like he wasn't really repressed, he was just…constrained. Under pressure! So, when the mask comes along, it's not creating a personality, it's magnifying something that already existed. When he is going to the Coco Bongo, he is all dressed up nice and his hair is perfect. "Smoking!" My theory? The mask is a catalyst, not a creator. It doesn't turn Stanley into someone brand new; it cranks up the volume on the dial that was already set to "slightly off-kilter." The mask might give him the powers, but that manic grin and the zoot suit dancing? I think that was always bubbling beneath the surface. I mean, come on...that poor mechanic! "Somebody stop me!" What do you guys think? Am I reaching or is there something to this idea that Stanley was always waiting for his moment to shine... cartoonishly?
