Natural Born Killers: Still messed up after all these years?
Okay, so I just re-watched Natural Born Killers for like, the millionth time. And I'm still not sure WHAT to make of it. Like, Oliver Stone was clearly trying to say SOMETHING about media glorifying violence, right? But does the movie kinda... do the SAME thing? It's so stylized and over-the-top, with all those weird effects and jump cuts and the cartoon sequence... it's not exactly subtle! I remember being super impressed when I first saw it back in the day, but now it feels less like a brilliant commentary and more just... chaotic, you know? And Juliette Lewis and Woody Harrelson, man. They're both so good, but Mickey and Mallory are just... deeply disturbed. That diner scene? Where they just snap? Still gives me the creeps. And Robert Downey Jr. as the tabloid journalist is so perfectly sleazy. He's almost more terrifying than the killers themselves. It's like, who's actually worse in this movie? The people doing the killing or the people profiting from it? Maybe that's the point, I dunno. But seriously, what's the deal with the rattlesnake? Is that supposed to be symbolic or something? And that whole Native American shaman sequence felt kinda out of place, even for this movie. Like, Stone just threw everything at the screen and hoped something would stick. Did it work? I'm still on the fence, honestly. Maybe it's one of those movies that's more interesting to think about than it is to actually watch. So, hit me up. What does everyone else think? Is Natural Born Killers a misunderstood masterpiece, or just a gloriously messy train wreck? I'm leaning towards the latter, but I'm open to being convinced otherwise. Maybe I missed something all these years. P.S. anyone know if the director is related to Sharon Stone? Just thought of that...
