"What's Up, Doc?" - Pure Screwball Gold or Just Silly?

Okay, fellow GenXers, moviebuff_marc here, popping in with a question about "What's Up, Doc?" (1972). I saw this again recently, and it's still pretty dang funny, but I gotta ask... does it REALLY hold up to those classic screwball comedies like "Bringing Up Baby"? I mean, Streisand is definitely channeling Hepburn, and Ryan O'Neal is kinda doing his best Cary Grant impression, but something feels a little... different. Is it just me? That whole chase scene through San Francisco is legendary, I'll give it that. The gag with the Chinese dragon is pure genius, and I still laugh at Eunice Burns' reactions to everything – Madeline Kahn was robbed of an Oscar for that. But is it *consistent* genius? Sometimes it feels like they're just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, whereas something like "Bringing Up Baby" felt more meticulously crafted, even in its chaos. Maybe it's just that the humor ages differently, ya know? And speaking of aging… I wonder what younger audiences make of it? Do they even *get* the references? Or are they just like, 'Huh, plaid bags and a dictabelt player? What even *IS* a dictabelt?' Seriously, let me know your thoughts. Is this just nostalgic fluff for us old-timers, or is it genuinely timeless comedy? I'm genuinely curious to hear your perspectives. Also, somebody tell me if I'm misremembering the director... I can't place it!
