Okay, "Quiz Show" is WAY More Romantic Than I Expected??
Alright, confession time: I watched "Quiz Show" (1994) thinking it was gonna be all dry history and ethics lectures. I mean, Robert Redford directing a movie about game show rigging in the 50s? Snoozefest, right? WRONG. While the suspense of the investigation was gripping (Paul Scofield is a LEGEND), and the whole thing with Ralph Fiennes and John Turturro battling it out on TV had me on the edge of my seat...it was the other drama that got me. Unexpectedly, I was super invested in the ethics and love lives of the characters, especially the investigator, Richard Goodwin. His scenes where he's debating whether to call out the NBC head or try to take advantage of his position are phenomenal! Seriously, I went in expecting a history lesson and walked out kinda heartbroken for Herbert Stempel! Turturro's performance is amazing, making you feel for this quirky guy who just wants to be loved and loses everything trying. Plus, the simmering tension between Goodwin (Rob Morrow) and his wife, Sandra (the ever-brilliant Mira Sorvino), was so relatable! You could just feel the ambition crackling between them. She's pushing him, he's pulling back, and it's all wrapped up in this fascinating historical moment. If I'm being honest, I kinda shipped Richard and that other lawyer, though! Something about the way they were working together was compelling (even though it was entirely platonic.) And look, I'm not saying "Quiz Show" is the greatest romance of all time (I still stand by "When Harry Met Sally..."), but there's a surprising amount of human connection amidst all the political maneuvering and televised drama. The scene where Stempel has his breakdown after being forced to lose? Gut-wrenching! I think that's why this movie transcends being a simple history lesson. It's a commentary on our perception of the world and the people in the public eye. So, yeah, go watch "Quiz Show." But be prepared to feel things you didn't expect to feel, okay? And someone HAS to agree with me about Richard and his colleague! Tell me I'm not alone!!
