Dangerous Minds - Still packs a punch, but...am I missing something with Callie?
Okay, so I've seen Dangerous Minds a lot of times. Like, maybe too many? But every time I watch it, I pick up on something new. This time around, I'm really stuck on Callie (Bruguera). She's SUCH a tough character, dealing with so much at home, and she clearly has mad potential. But Mrs. Johnson (Pfeiffer) seems to focus way more on Emilio and Raul. Don't get me wrong, I love the whole 'Dylan Thomas' thing and Emilio's character arc is great, but is it just me, or does Callie kinda get sidelined? Like, remember the scene where Mrs. Johnson gives them all the A's? Callie looks so relieved! But then she doesn't really... do anything else prominent in the plot. We know she's smart, we see her struggling, but it feels like her story kinda just fades into the background compared to the boys. I feel like the movie kinda hints at her potential with the whole poetry thing, but then doesn't follow through. Maybe it's just because Pfeiffer and Rivera (Emilio) had amazing chemistry, but it felt like they didn't explore Callie's character enough. Was it just that the script focused on the male leads more, or am I missing something deeper about her role in the story? I'm genuinely curious if anyone else has noticed this or if I'm just projecting my own wishful thinking onto her character. Maybe they filmed more and it ended up on the cutting room floor! I still love the movie – it's got that 90s charm that always gets to me, and the soundtrack is iconic! But Callie's storyline just feels incomplete every time. What are your thoughts? Is she a missed opportunity, or am I overthinking it?
