The Rock: Cage's Leather Jacket & Hummel's Wardrobe - Thoughts?

Okay, so I just rewatched The Rock (again, lol) and I’m always struck by the… choices… in costume design. I mean, it's a Bay movie, so subtle isn't exactly the aim, but still! First off, Nicolas Cage's Stanley Goodspeed. The dude is supposed to be this nerdy biochemist, but they stick him in that leather jacket for basically the entire Alcatraz sequence?! It looks cool, don't get me wrong, but it feels so out of place. Like, I get he's trying to be "badass" but it's a bit much, right? I wonder if they were attempting some kind of visual shorthand to show his transformation throughout the movie? Then there's General Hummel. Ed Harris is phenomenal, obviously, but his whole look is so impeccably put together. Those crisp military fatigues, the perfectly blocked out gray hair... it screams 'tragic hero' even before he starts monologuing. Did anyone else notice they deliberately kept him in shades of gray and olive? And then I think the way he looks in the final scene is so deliberately done, it really does sell that his character made a mistake and how his honor and pride got twisted. Overall, a great choice and contrast between his initial look. What are your thoughts on the costuming and the overall effect on the film?
