Chain Reaction: Underrated Thriller or Nah?
Okay, so I just re-watched Chain Reaction (1996) the other night. I know, I know, Liam Neeson before he was an action GOD, Keanu Reeves doing… whatever it is Keanu Reeves does. But honestly, I kinda dig it? Like, the whole 'clean energy breakthrough gets framed for blowing up Chicago' plot is a bit outlandish, but the pacing is pretty solid and there are some legitimately tense moments. The scene where Keanu is trying to outrun the helicopter in the quarry? My palms were sweating. I think the 'tech is evil' trope is a little heavy-handed tho. What gets me is that they never really explain who's behind the conspiracy that well. Was it the energy companies? Was it the government? I'm not sure if it was meant to that ambiguous or the writing was just messy. But the whole setup is pretty cool, and I think a lot of the hate it gets is undeserved. Morgan Freeman is, of course, amazing. He always elevates whatever movie he's in, right? I think the main issue is that it tries to be a serious thriller and a big action movie at the same time, and it doesn't QUITE nail either. Maybe if they'd leaned harder into one or the other it would have been better received? I dunno. So, yeah... Chain Reaction. Not a genre defining movie, but a solid thriller with some good performances and a killer premise that's worth a watch if you haven't seen it, or a re-watch if you have. What do you guys think? Am I alone on this one? Let me know!
