Cesar and Rosalie: More Than Just a Love Triangle?

Okay, so I finally watched "Cesar and Rosalie" (1972) and, wow, it's way more complex than the simple synopsis suggests. I went in expecting a fluffy rom-com with jealousy and awkward situations. I got that, for sure, but there's this undercurrent of something deeper, especially with Cesar's character. Like, is he *really* in love with Rosalie, or is it more about possession? The scene where he basically throws a tantrum at the restaurant when Antoine (the ex) shows up? That felt less like heartbroken longing and more like 'how DARE someone else want my toy.' And Rosalie, bless her, seems a little… passive? She's beautiful and charming, but she lets these two men practically dictate her life for a good chunk of the movie. I kept wanting to yell at her to take control! It made me wonder if the film is secretly about the limited choices women had back then (and sometimes still have, tbh) and how they're often positioned as prizes to be won. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but the ending, while seemingly happy, still left me feeling uneasy. Like, has anything *really* changed, or is she just choosing the lesser of two controlling evils? What I'm getting at is, I think Cesar's "love" is actually a manifestation of his insecurity and need for validation. His wealth and power are almost used as weapons to keep Rosalie in his orbit. It's a bit disturbing when you think about it. I think it a very different film upon rewatch. Anyway, just my two cents. Curious to hear what others think, especially about Cesar's motivations. Am I way off base here?
