"The Saint" (1997): Cold Fusion, Hot Mess, or...Underrated Genius?

Okay, so I know "The Saint" (1997) isn't exactly on most people's 'family movie night' lists, but hear me out. My husband and I were talking about 90s movies the other day (because, nostalgia!), and it popped into my head. I remember being vaguely obsessed with Val Kilmer's disguises when I was younger. Like, how many identities DID he have? It's definitely more adult-themed with the espionage and Catherine Zeta-Jones being all brilliant and stuff, but I honestly think the core concept of ingenuity and outsmarting the bad guys is something older kids could really get into. (Maybe pre-teen, teen level appropriate) Here's my half-baked theory, though: Is "The Saint" secretly smarter than we give it credit for? It's got this whole 'cold fusion' plot, which felt super sci-fi back then, but now with climate change and renewable energy being such huge topics, it almost feels... prescient? Like, the movie's premise is basically 'what if we could solve the world's energy problems?' I know, I know, it's a cheesy action movie at its heart, but that underlying idea's kinda profound when you rethink it. The villain's motive is pretty standard bad-guy stuff, but the stakes are much higher when you think about what cold fusion could actually do. Plus, and this is totally my opinion, Catherine Zeta-Jones is incredible. She's smart, she's capable, and she's not just a damsel in distress. Her character, Emma Russell, actually drives a lot of the plot forward. I love seeing strong female characters in these types of movies. Maybe it's time for a re-watch? I'm tempted to show it to my older kid (he's almost 12) and see what he thinks. I just hope he doesn't start trying to master disguise techniques... One thing I just remembered... the costumes are seriously dated! But maybe that adds to the charm, right? Okay, I'm rambling. Thoughts? Am I totally off base here, or is there something more to "The Saint" than just 90s action fluff?
