Le Cercle Rouge: More Like Le Cercle Beige? (Kidding...Mostly)
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "Le Cercle Rouge" (thanks for bugging me, guys!). I know, I know, Melville is practically scripture for some of you. And look, I appreciate a good, slow-burn heist flick. But man, this one was *glacial*. Like, literally felt like I aged a decade watching it. Alain Delon is, of course, devastatingly handsome playing Corey. That goes without saying. And I did enjoy the almost complete lack of dialogue for stretches of the movie. That robbery scene! Super tense, even though it took approximately 47 years to complete. I was practically yelling GO GO GO at the screen. But honestly, the whole movie felt a bit...detached? I didn't really connect with *any* of the characters. Even Vogel, the supposed 'menace', just kind of shuffled around looking vaguely annoyed. Maybe I'm just missing something, or maybe I was in the wrong mood. I think the biggest problem is that it promised this awesome collision of fates but delivered something a little too...clinical. I thought the ending was pretty bleak, and true to the film's mood, left me feeling nothing. I can respect the craft and the style, but personally, I think I prefer my crime dramas with a little more heart...or at least a little more snappy dialogue. Am I alone on this? Let me know what you think!
