Scary Movie: Still Holds Up (Kinda?)
Okay, so I just re-watched "Scary Movie" (2000) last night, and I have thoughts. First off, it's insane how many horror movies they crammed into this parody. Like, Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Sixth Sense... it's a whirlwind of 90s/early 2000s horror nostalgia. Some of the jokes are still laugh-out-loud funny, especially anything with Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris is a freaking comedic genius, let's be real). And Shorty Meeks? Marlon Wayans killed that role. The whole 'weed paranoia' subplot is dated af, but whatever, it still makes me giggle. Defintely a movie that made me laugh harder when I was younger, however it still gets some laughs out of me. But, man, some of the humor really hasn't aged well. Like, at all. I cringed a few times, I'm not gonna lie. And the plot? Let's just say coherence wasn't exactly a priority, LOL. But honestly, you don't go into "Scary Movie" expecting a cinematic masterpiece. You go in expecting stupid, over-the-top comedy and that's exactly what you get. I feel like there's a difference between finding some stuff funny and being able to look at it with a modern lens. I appreciate the film, it had it's moments, and also has some problematic parts. It's a product of its time, what can you do, right? Overall, "Scary Movie" is a flawed but fun watch. It's not high art, but it's a great way to switch off your brain and have a few laughs (and maybe cringe a little). I recommend it if you're looking for something silly and nostalgic! What did you guys think of it? Did it hold up for you or is it too dated to enjoy?
