Chocolat (2000): Anyone else completely spellbound by this film?

Hey fellow cinephiles! Priya here, back with another film that's been swirling in my head. I recently re-watched "Chocolat" (2000), and wow, it's just as magical as I remember. Juliette Binoche is absolutely luminous as Vianne, and the way she just knows what kind of chocolate someone needs? Pure cinema! I find it so interesting how a simple treat like chocolate can become a symbol of rebellion and change in a community that's so stuck in it's ways. What really struck me this time, though, was the portrayal of the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina). He's so rigidly pious and desperately trying to maintain order. Did anyone else feel a weird little bit of pity for him despite all his attempts to shut Vianne down? I mean, he's clearly just scared of losing control, but his methods felt so outdated. And the scene where he's about to smash the chocolate nativity... intense stuff! It made me wonder, is there a balance to be found between tradition and embracing new perspectives? Ultimately, "Chocolat" always leaves me feeling warm and hopeful, and maybe a little craving chocolate. But I'm curious, especially those of you who've watched a lot of international films like me, what are your thoughts on the film's themes? Does the story feel too simplistic, or is that part of its charm? And did anyone else think Roux and Vianne would end up together? I totally shipped them! Let me know what you think! Happy watching ✨
