OMG, Mean Streets is a Rom-Com in Disguise?! (Kinda)
Okay, so I just watched "Mean Streets" (don't judge my eclectic taste, okay? I need *something* to watch between "When Harry Met Sally" viewings!). And hear me out... is it just me, or is there a seriously twisted romantic comedy hiding in there somewhere? I mean, Charlie's gotta choose between his loyalty to Johnny Boy (total trainwreck, but you know, some people are drawn to that...) and like, potentially evolving as a person. That's basically the "misunderstanding" trope on steroids, right? And then there's Theresa! Poor Theresa. She *clearly* wants something real with Charlie, and he's all "I'm gonna save you from yourself" which, let's be honest, is the WORST rom-com trope ever! He thinks he knows what's best for her instead of, you know, asking her what she wants. Typical guy move, even in the '70s apparently. Am I the only one who secretly rooted for her to run off with a nice accountant or something? Seriously though, the whole dynamic is so angsty and passionate. It's like if "Friends" took a really, really dark turn and everyone was constantly yelling and driving around in beat-up cars. Plus, the resolution is like, the opposite of a typical rom-com, so maybe I'm stretching it, but still! Anyone else pick up on these weird vibes? Or am I just projecting because every movie is a rom-com in my head?
