Resident Evil (2002): A Guilty Pleasure Classic?

Okay, international film snob (affectionately, of course!) Priya Sharma here, weighing in on something a little...different for me. I finally re-watched the original "Resident Evil" (2002) the other night. I can't even pretend it's high art, but man, is it entertaining. Admittedly, I went in with lowered expectations. I mean, Milla Jovovich kicking zombie butt? It's not exactly Bergman. But the sheer camp factor, the genuinely creepy moments (those zombie dobermans still freak me out!), and the industrial soundtrack just hit a certain nerve. I particularly enjoyed Michelle Rodriguez's character; she brought a much-needed dose of badass practicality to the whole Umbrella Corporation mess. And that laser grid hallway scene? Iconic, even if completely unrealistic. I remember being a kid and thinking how awesome that was especially as that music was the backdrop! Look, I get it. The dialogue is cheesy, the plot is kinda thin, and the CGI hasn't exactly aged gracefully. But for a zombie action flick, it's got a certain charm. It's like the cinematic equivalent of junk food – you know it's not good for you, but sometimes you just NEED that cheesy, gory goodness. It's got a very fun feeling and great way to spend an evening! So, what do you all think? Is "Resident Evil" a guilty pleasure classic, or just plain bad? Let me know your thoughts!
