Okay but Erika and Anneliese are totally gay for each other, right???
Okay, so I just rewatched Barbie as The Princess & the Pauper (don't judge, it's a comfort movie!) and I'm convinced that Erika and Anneliese are like, totally in love. I know, I know, it's a kids' movie, but hear me out! Think about it: they have this INSTANT connection when they meet, and they're literally willing to risk everything for each other. When Anneliese sings 'Free' about wanting to be with someone, it always felt like she wasn't even that into Julian, but she was feeling Erika's journey. When Erika sings 'I am a girl like you' it feels to me like they are talking about breaking down some barriers. The whole movie is about them overcoming their supposed places and being together. I mean that song 'I am a girl like you'??? Come on! It's practically a lesbian anthem in disguise! And it's not just the songs. Look at their interactions! The way they look at each other is way more intense than how they look at Julian or Dominick. Remember when Erika saves Anneliese from Preminger? The relief and gratitude on Anneliese's face? It's like she's seeing her knight in shining armor (who happens to be a girl!). And Erika stepping up to pretend to be the princess? Total selfless act of love for her. They are both so selfless for each other and the fact that they have to play the game to get what they want to feel right is really cool! I know the ending has them both getting married to the princes and stuff, but I honestly think that's just what they had to do. Back then, the rules where different and it was the only way to save the kingdom. But in my headcanon, Erika and Anneliese are secretly together, ruling the kingdom side-by-side, and sneaking off for romantic dates in the gardens. Anyone else feel this way, or am I just projecting my own sapphic tendencies onto a Barbie movie? I need to know I'm not alone! Like seriously, I'm not saying the princes aren't cute… I just think Barbie and her lookalike had a much deeper connection! It's always been the gayest Barbie movie and no one can convince me otherwise.
