Mathilde's Yellow: More Than Just Sunshine?

Okay, so I've watched "A Very Long Engagement" like... a lot of times. Probably more than is healthy, tbh. But every time, I notice something new! This time, it's the color yellow. Hear me out. Mathilde, our amazing protagonist, wears yellow SO much. Her coat in the beginning, little bits of it in her outfits later, even the walls in her aunt and uncle's house have this warm, yellowish tint. At first, I just thought it was a pretty color that suited Audrey Tautou, but then I started thinking about what yellow represents: hope, optimism, happiness. And Mathilde, despite everything, is stubbornly hopeful that Manech is alive. It's like the costume designer was visually telling us this, even when everything looks bleak. But here's where it gets interesting. Think about Tina Lombardi (Marion Cotillard, perfection). She's all darkness, vengeance, and black clothing. Basically, the opposite of Mathilde. Is the film subtly suggesting that Mathilde's hope – her "yellow" – is what keeps her going, while Tina's lack of it consumed her? It's almost like a visual representation of their different approaches to dealing with loss. I'm probably overthinking it, I know, but it's just something that keeps nagging at me. Anyone else notice this, or am I just going crazy in quarantine? 😂 Maybe next re-watch, I'll focus on blue or something... this film has so many layers!
