Cinderella, But Make It Seventies: Obsessed with *Three Wishes...
Okay, so I finally caved and watched "Three Wishes for Cinderella" (1973) and OMG the costumes! Seriously, I know the story is classic, but Popelka's wardrobe transformation throughout the movie is *chef's kiss*. The peasant clothes are perfectly earthy and distressed (in a good way!), which makes her sudden archery outfit moment even more iconic. That green velvet hunting suit? I'm dying. Dying! So chic, so practical, even now it could be a modern piece. And can we talk about the stepmother's outfits? Peak villain style. Think high collars, severe silhouettes, and that icy, almost metallic color palette. It screams 'power' and 'repression' all at once. Subtle details, right? But they completely sell her character. I did think the Prince's velvet coat was a bit much even for a prince, but hey, it was the 70s. Gotta love the excess. I'm not sure if I'm entirely sold on the 'three magic acorns' plot device but the visual storytelling through the costumes is defintely the highlight. It's so much more than just pretty dresses; each outfit tells a story about the character's journey and state of mind. This version feels so much more spirited and independent than some of the Disney versions. Popelka is a total badass in her own right. What did you guys think of the costume design? Any other details you noticed? I'm keen to discuss! Maybe I'm overanalyzing, but I just think costume design has so much to add to a film.
