"A Pain in the Ass" (1973) - More Like a Pain in the *Funny Bone*!

Just finished watching "A Pain in the Ass" (1973) and wow, what a ride. Okay, so, I went in expecting some dark humor, a bit of a thriller maybe, but I got a full-blown comedy of errors. Lino Ventura as the hitman Ralf Milan is gold. The man's got such a stoic face, and then *everything* goes wrong. Like, cat-stuck-in-the-toilet wrong. You know, the absurdity of it all reminds me a little of "Fargo"--just the way a simple plan goes sideways. Remember when Marge says, "There's more to life than a little money, you know. Don'tcha know that? And here ya are. And it's a beautiful day." Well, for Milan, it’s a beautiful day to have the worst possible neighbour ever. "Tough Luck" would be an understatement. Jacques Brel nails the role of the suicidal neighbour, Pignon. You can't help but feel a liiittle bad for the guy, even though he's making things exponentially worse for Milan. The scene where Milan is trying to take out the target from the hotel window and Pignon is simultaneously trying to hang himself from the same window? Comedy gold. I mean, dark comedy, but still! I was legit laughing out loud. The timing is impeccable. The whole thing is just so chaotic and absurd, and it just keeps escalating. It's a slow burn setup but the payoff is fantastic. Okay, it is a bit dated in some aspects, and the ending maybe felt a little rushed (or too convenient?), I suppose, but overall, I really enjoyed it. It's definitely going on my list of "underrated comedies that deserve more love." "Well, nobody’s perfect" (Some Like it Hot), but this movie is pretty darn close. Anyone else seen it? What did you think? Did anyone else catch the obvious "Odd Couple" vibes, but with way higher stakes?
