3:10 to Yuma - is Wade really that bad?

Okay, just saw the 2007 version of 3:10 to Yuma again (yeah, I know it's a remake, lay off). I gotta say, Russell Crowe's performance as Ben Wade is just... magnetic. But it got me thinking, is he really as evil as the movie paints him? Hear me out. We see him do some terrible stuff, sure. Cold-blooded killings, the stagecoach robbery, all that. But there's also this weird, almost… artistic side to him? The sketching, the Bible verses. And then there's his fascination with Dan Evans (Christian Bale). It's like he sees something in Evans, this inherent goodness, that he simultaneously respects and wants to corrupt. Remember the scene where Wade manipulates the posse members to reveal their true colours? He doesn't have to do that, but he chooses to expose their corruption. Is he actually punishing them for being hypocrites? My theory leans towards Wade being more of a chaotic force of nature rather than pure evil. He's absolutely capable of violence, no question. But maybe, just maybe, he's also a twisted sort of moral compass, reflecting the darkness that already exists in the 'civilized' world around him. Think about it - the railroad itself is built on exploiting the land and the workers. Is Wade that much worse than the forces of 'progress' he's supposedly fighting against? Perhaps the real question isn't whether Wade is evil, but whether the so-called 'good' guys are truly any better. Just a thought I had, would like some other opinions, maybe I'm way off base!
