"21" - Underrated or Just Overhyped Early 2000s Fluff?
Okay, so I just re-watched "21" (the Blackjack movie with Jim Sturgess) the other night. I remember seeing this in theaters way back when, and being kinda blown away by the idea of card counting and Vegas. But watching it now, like...it's kinda cheesy, right? The story's obviously Hollywood-ized to the extreme. What I'm curious about, though, is the technical side. Did anyone else feel like the sound design during the actual card counting scenes was actually pretty effective? I mean, the way they used like, subtle clicks and whirs to represent the mental calculations and the pressure building... I thought that was a cool touch. Also, the montages of Vegas are pretty well done, but that's just throwing money at the screen. I didn't notice any glaringly bad CGI or anything that pulled me out of the moment. But everything else? Eh. The acting is...fine. Spacey is Spacey, Sturgess is trying, and Kate Bosworth is… there. I just feel like the movie could've been SO much better if they focused less on the cheesy romance and more on the actual strategy and tension of card counting. Maybe that's just me being a nerd, tho. What do y'all think? Underrated gem or overhyped nostalgia trip? Is their a specific effects or sound moment you enjoyed? And also, did anyone ever try to learn card counting after watching this movie? fess up!
