Welcome To The Sticks - More Than Just Laughs?
Okay, so I just watched "Welcome to the Sticks" (Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis) for like, the fifth time. I know, I know, it's a comedy, not exactly my usual horror/thriller fare. But something about it always gets me thinking, and I wanted to get your opinions. Specifically, it's the way the movie plays with Philippe's initial dread of Bergues. He's SO convinced it's going to be some horrific, backward place, and that comes from such deep-seated prejudices, right? It's like, on the surface, it's all goofy and about learning to appreciate new cultures, but underneath, there's this layer of anxiety and fear of the unknown that I find really interesting. Does anyone else pick up on that, or am I totally overthinking a simple comedy? Also, that scene where his wife Julie is constantly crying because she thinks he's miserable... that's almost a little unsettling, right? Like, her depression is kinda played for laughs, but it's also a really raw and uncomfortable emotion that hangs over the whole movie. It feels like that could be a good setup for a horror movie where the wife gets increasingly unstable! Anyway, just curious to see what others think. Is there anything deeper to this movie than just goofy accents and cultural misunderstandings, or am I just projecting my genre obsession onto everything I watch? 🤣
