Okay, hear me out: The House Bunny is secretly genius (kinda)

So, I just finished watching The House Bunny again, and I know, I know, it's dumb. Like, aggressively dumb. But... hear me out. What if it's actually a REALLY subtle satire about… identity and performativity? I mean, Shelley gets kicked out of the Playboy Mansion because she's "old" (at 27!), and suddenly she has to figure out who she is without that whole aesthetic. Right? Then she stumbles in to trying to change this sorority, but in the end she has to change, too. It's like, she never really knew herself. She's just doing what she thinks everyone else wants. Like, think about the scene where she's trying to teach the Zetas how to be "hot." It's all surface level, right? Makeup, clothes, talking to boys. But then Natalie kind of calls her out on it, and you can see Shelley actually start to question her own values. And the whole 'being yourself' schtick at the end? Yeah, it's cheesy, but it actually lands better than you'd think. It all comes full circle, right? And okay, some of the jokes are…dated. Like, seriously 2000s vibes and the stereotypes are broad. But maybe that's part of the point too. It's showing how these superficial things can impact self worth and really impact your life. It shows it in an over-the-top way, but under the surface there's something there. I'm not saying it's some hidden masterpiece or anything, but I think there's more going on in The House Bunny than people give it credit for. Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but it's a fun movie to rewatch and you still get a laugh out of it. Definitely a good one to turn your brain off after a long day!
