"The Expendables" Score - Does it BANG as much as the Movie?
Okay, so I finally revisited "The Expendables" the other night. Pure, unadulterated 80s-style action, right? Explosions for days. But as always, my brain immediately went to the score. Brian Tyler is the composer, and honestly, he's got some seriously strong tracks in his filmography. Think "Rambo," "Eagle Eye," even some Marvel stuff. Thing is, with "The Expendables," I'm a bit torn. The main theme? Pretty epic. It definitely gets the blood pumping and sets the tone perfectly for these grizzled mercs kicking ass. I especially dig how Tyler weaves in these little nods to classic action scores. There's a definite Goldsmith vibe at times, which I appreciate. But... I feel like the score gets a little lost in the mix sometimes. The sound design is SO loud and chaotic (which, to be fair, is kinda the point of the movie), that the nuances in the score kind of get buried. I wish it had a bigger presence during the hand-to-hand combat scenes - Lee Christmas' knife fights could have REALLY benefited from some more focused scoring. There are moments that genuinely work though. Thinking specifically of the buildup before they storm the palace on Vilena. The tension there is tangible, and the music assists that feeling. It's not a groundbreaking score, but it does what it needs to do. It supports the action, doesn't distract, and provides some heroic moments. I just feel like it could have been even MORE iconic, y'know? Maybe if it was mixed differently? Overall, solid effort from Tyler, but not his best. It's a fun listen on its own, but kinda gets overshadowed by the sheer amount of testosterone and firepower on screen. What do you guys think? Am I being too harsh? Any particular cues you really enjoy?
