Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - Underrated Visuals or Just Flashy?
Okay, so I just re-watched Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and I gotta say, it's still a pretty fun flick, even if it's not winning any awards for deep storytelling. What REALLY stood out to me this time around was the VFX. I mean, yeah, some of it's a little dated now (it's been like, what, 14 years?), but the actual concept of the time rewind sequences, the sand effects themselves, are still pretty impressive. Like, the scene where Dastan first uses the Dagger in that marketplace? The way the sand swirls and reverses everything, plus the sound design that accompanies it – chef's kiss. I genuinely think they put some serious effort into making those moments visually engaging. Jake Gyllenhaal as Dastan... look, I know a lot of people had issues with the casting (and yeah, maybe a little whitewashing going on), but I thought he did a decent job with the physical aspects of the role. Those parkour moves, even if they're heavily reliant on stunt doubles, are pretty slick. And the fight choreography overall is solid. It's definitely a popcorn movie though, you know? Don't go in expecting a historical epic or anything. Just switch your brain off and enjoy the spectacle. One thing I always wondered about is why they didn't lean even more into the soundscape. The initial use of the Dagger sounded awesome, but what about the other times? Maybe a more noticeable 'whoosh' sound as the time reverses. Just a thought. Overall, I honestly think its more visually interesting than people give it credit for. Anyone else feel the same, or am I alone on this one?
