Confessions of a Cinephile: Guilty Pleasure Time – Tooth Fairy (2010)
Okay, okay, international film snob Priya here admitting to something potentially embarrassing: I kind of enjoyed "Tooth Fairy" (2010). I know, I know, compared to Bergman or Kurosawa it's…well, it's not. But sometimes you need a little lighthearted fluff, right? And honestly, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is just so darn charming. Seeing him in a pink tutu and wings trying to navigate the fairy world? Comedy gold, I tell you. The scene where he's shrunk and fighting with the cats? Hysterical. I'm not saying it's high art, but as a vehicle for The Rock's comedic timing, it REALLY works. It's definitely predictable, the whole grumpy hockey player learns a lesson about believing in magic and being a good human thing. But the supporting cast helps. Stephen Merchant as his caseworker, Tracy Morgan as the Head Fairy, and Julie Andrews as the Tooth Fairy Queen? It's a bizarre but delightful ensemble. And Ashley Judd is lovely as the love interest. I just wish the kids were not so annoying! That's my main criticism overall, that the kids are very much the stereotypical brat-kid of these movies. I wouldn't put it in my top 10 (or even top 1000, let's be real), but if you need a silly movie to watch with your kids (or just for yourself when you're feeling down), “Tooth Fairy” delivers. It definitely has it's problems/goofyness, but it's a sweet little film. Don't expect Citizen Kane, and you might just find yourself smiling. Did anyone else secretly kinda love this movie or am I all alone here? Haha! Honestly sometimes I think that the actors make a movie so much enjoyable and so many of them can just nail the role that the plot isn't even important which is the case with this film, at least for me. Thoughts?
