"Faster" - A Bud Moore V8 of a Revenge Flick, But Does it Hold Up?
Alright, fellow cinephiles, moviebuff_marc checking in. Just re-watched "Faster" (2010) the other night. Dwayne Johnson in full-on stoic vengeance mode, basically channeling peak Eastwood. Remember those glorious, gritty revenge flicks of the 70s and 80s? This kinda scratches that itch. The opening scene with the Chevelle SS... pure muscle car poetry. The way he just tears out of that junkyard, you know he means business. Kinda makes you miss properly loud engines and no CGI-everything. I gotta be honest, though, the pacing is a little wonky. Billy Bob Thornton's cop character, while well-acted, feels like he belongs in a completely different movie. Good ol' Billy Bob always brings his A-game but the whole 'addict cop on his last legs' thing felt a bit shoehorned in. And then you have the hitman played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen... yeah, he's got the look and the brooding thing going for him, but his storyline with Maggie Grace (before she ended up kidnapped again, ha!) felt forced. Like they needed some artsy contrast to all the engine revving and shotgun blasts. Overall? A decent popcorn flick, if you’re in the mood for some old-school, uncomplicated revenge. It ain’t "Death Wish" or "Rolling Thunder". It's more like... a slightly over-caffeinated version of "The Driver" (that Walter Hill masterpiece, not the Gosling one). Worth a watch if it's on cable, but probably not something you'd rush out to buy on Blu-Ray. Just my two cents. What did you guys think?
