Dark Star: Beach balls, bombs, and existential dread...wtf?
Okay, so I just finished watching Dark Star. And...wow. I'm not even sure what to make of it. I mean, it's SO low budget, you can practically see the strings holding up the alien (which, let's be honest, is just a freaking painted beach ball. A painted beach ball that ACTUALLY makes some really weird cooing noises that are kinda unsettling actually....). But, like, that's kinda the charm, right? It's so bad it's good? Or is it just... bad? I can't decide! What REALLY got me though was the whole bomb situation. Like, seriously, a sentient bomb that's questioning its existence and getting all philosophical from reading phenomenology? That's some next-level weirdness right there. And when it goes all "I think, therefore I am," and decides to blow everyone to smithereens? I almost choked on my popcorn! The sequence with Doolittle trying to talk it down by using logic puzzles? Pure genius. Or maybe I'm just easily amused at oh-so-bad sci-fi... anyone else find that scene darkly hilarious, or am I just super messed up for laughing at the impending doom of everyone on board? And that end scene... Doolittle surfing on a piece of the ship burning up into the atmosphere? Talk about going out with a bang! I'm not even sure what it all *means*, if it even means anything at all... but I can't stop thinking about it. So, yeah I had so many random questions so I thought I'd ask here what you dudes and dudettes thought. Did you find it funny, terrifying, boring, or just plain head-scratching? Especially the bomb scene... any thoughts on a more 'right' interpretation? Seriously, somebody please explain this movie to me. My brain hurts. (But in a good way, maybe...)
